The story of “Minga”

Minga is a word Craig and Marc Kielburger first encountered while building a Free The Children school in Ecuador. Translated, minga means a community coming together to work for the collective good of all. When this word is called, people stop everything for individual gain, no matter how important, and come together for the benefit of others (not simply themselves).

While Craig and Marc were building a school overseas in Ecuador, they were disappointed when they realized they did not have enough time to complete the school. After informing an elderly female who was a leader of the community about their failure, she called a minga. The very next day, to Craig and Marc’s surprise, a wave of volunteers, of varying ages came to assist with the school-building. Some volunteers walked from extreme distances to help. Amazingly, they finished building the school that same day. Most of the volunteers would never have been able to reap the benefits of the school they so greatly helped to complete.

Simply stated, Minga is about putting others before yourself.

“Creating ‘We’ Schools”

Never doubt that a small, committed group of people can change the world. Indeed it is the only thing that ever has.
